Several area events are scheduled Friday to celebrate 'Flag Day.'

At 11 a.m., the City of Reno is holding a ceremony at the STEAD WELCOMES YOU sign on the corner of Stead Boulevard and Silver Lake Road.

The street corner, which is also home to a flag pole that has not been used in recent years, is known to the neighborhood as the “peanut” due to the shape of its design.

“I am honored to announce that we will again raise and fly an American flag at this street corner in Ward 4,” Reno City Councilmember Bonnie Weber said. “To do it on Flag Day makes it that much more special.”

Weber was a participant in the Stead Neighborhood Advisory Board (NAB) that originally established the sign and flag pole.

The event will feature a performance of the National Anthem by a representative of the Sierra Nevada Job Corps Center, a partner in the project, and a Flag Day Proclamation. In addition, Nora Downs, a student at Coral Academy of Science Middle School, will read her award-winning essay titled, “What the American Flag Means to Me.”

Washoe County officials say the Second Judicial District Court in partnership with the US District Court will host Flag Day on Friday.

They said Sierra Street will be closed from Island Street to Court Street from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. due to the event.

And the 21st annual Nevada Guard Flag Day Ceremony/244th Army birthday will be held in Carson City at 10 a.m. at the Capitol Building.

Nevada's first official flag will be displayed and several military members will give speeches.

KTVN's Arianna Bennett will emcee the free event.
