This fall school will start a little later at some area elementary schools to allow for extra time over the summer to make improvements to classrooms.
"For all intents and purposes the idea is to make the classroom in some of our older schools be brand new if you will, similar to the newer schools,” says Joe Gabica, Deputy Chief Facilities Management Officer, Washoe County School District.
For schools with the revitalization calendar classes will start on August 22nd, two weeks later than most schools that are under the balanced calendar.
That will give time to make upgrades including putting in new carpets, windows and cubby holes and in general making the environment more comfortable.
To make up the time lost in the summer, winter break will be shortened by a week and there will be no fall break.
The revitalization calendar will only be in effect for the 2016-2017 school year.
The schools impacted are Roy Gomm, Lena Juniper, Pleasant Valley, Maimie Towles and Verdi Elementary.
