Strong Breaks Nevada record, Wolf Pack routs Rams in season finale

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) -- Carson Strong threw four touchdown passes and Nevada routed Colorado State 52-10 on Saturday night.

Strong completed 17 of 22 passes for 288 yards with a pair of touchdown passes each to Tory Horton and Romeo Doubs. Horton made four catches for 113 yards and Doubs had five for 97.

Strong hit Horton with a 27-yard touchdown pass and a 54-yarder on consecutive drives to start the game. Strong added an 11-yard TD pass to Doubs as the Wolf Pack built a 31-0 halftime lead.

Strong lofted a 66-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Doubs to cap a four-play, 99-yard drive midway through the third quarter.

Nevada (8-4, 5-3 Mountain West Conference) rebounded from a pair of two-point losses against San Diego State and Air Force. It was the Wolf Packs' first win on the road since beating Boise State on Oct. 2.

Tight end Trey McBride scored on a 69-yard run for Colorado State (3-9, 2-6). Todd Centeio threw for 187 yards and two interceptions.

  • Nevada ends the regular season 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the Mountain West with a 52-10 win over Colorado State. The Rams fall to 3-9 overall and 2-6 in conference play with the loss.

 

  • QB Carson Strong completed 17 of 22 pass attempts for 288 yards and four touchdowns. The 77% completion percentage marked his 4th-highest this year. Strong’s four touchdown passes gives him 36 TD passes this season which is a single season record in Nevada football history, surpassing Chris Vargas (34, 1993). 

 

  • Strong has thrown for 4,175 yards this season which is the second-most yards in a single-season in Nevada football history. Strong is 90 yards behind Chris Vargas (4,265) who holds the program’s single-season yards record. He has thrown 9,368 yards in his career which is third all time, trailing Colin Kaepernick (2nd; 10,098) and David Neill (1st; 10,901) in the passing record books.

 

  • The Pack rushed for 226 yards which is the most combined rushing yards this season, surpassing the 145 rushing yards recorded against Idaho State (9/11). RB Avery Morrow led the way with 88 yards on five rushes with one touchdown. RB Devonte Lee rushed seven times for 57 yards and one touchdown, and RB Toa Taua carried the ball 14 times for 69 yards. QB Nate Cox recorded his first career rushing touchdown with a 15-yard rush to cap a seven play 45-yard drive with a TD to give Nevada a 45-7 lead.

 

  • WR Tory Horton made four catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns including a long of 54 yards on his second TD catch of the game to push the Packs’ lead to 14-0 with 11:16 left in the 1st quarter. WR Romeo Doubs caught five passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Doubs now has 1,109 receiving yards for his career and has set a new career high with 11 receiving touchdowns.

 

  • QB Nate Cox made an appearance in the fourth quarter, recording his first career rushing touchdown. Cox completed 3 of 5 passes for 14 yards. 

 

  • Nevada’s defense recorded six sacks and 10.0 tackles for loss. The 10.0 tackles for loss tied a season high (3x, last; vs. UNLV, 10/29). The 6.0 sacks tie the second-most in a game this season (most; 8.0 vs. Idaho State, 9/11).

 

  • The defense recorded 97 total tackles which are the most in a game this season.

 

  • DB Jordan Lee led the Pack in tackles with 13, including eight solo tackles. Lee also led the Wolf Pack with two fumble recoveries. He now has five fumble recoveries this season which is a season high. Lee has recorded 59 tackles this season which is a career high to bring his total tackles to 103.

 

  • DE Daniel Grzesiak posted 2.5 tackles for a loss of 12 yards, 1.5 sacks for a loss of eight yards, and forced a fumble to help lead the Pack in all three of those categories. Grzesiak’s 19 total tackles this season are a career high as well as his 6.5 tackles for loss.

 

  • The defense held Colorado State to 10 points which marks the lowest point total allowed in a game this season,

 

  • DL Sam Hammond posted 1.5 sacks to bring his career-total to 13.0 sacks, including a season-high 6.5 sacks this season.

 

  • LB Daiyan Henley was second on the team with 11 tackles to bring his season total to 103 tackles which is 1st on the team.

 

  • DBs Tyson Williams and BerDale Robins each recorded an interception to give the Pack two forced turnovers in a game for the third time this season. It was the fourth time this season that the defense made two or more interceptions in a game. It marked the third interception of the season for Williams, which is a career high. Robins matched his season-high with his second interception of the season to give him six for his career.
