A lot of companies are losing employees during the pandemic, but some are thriving during these trying times. Reno-based tree company Arbor Pros has been busy these last few weeks.

"We're an arborist service here," said Owner Chayce Cassani. "We do nothing but tree trimming, removals and pruning and we've been going full-bore the entire time. We have quite a few large-scale projects to keep us busy during the slower times for residential work, and this is the prime time busy season, so we're looking to hire probably about 30% more employees than we have."

There are multiple positions available and the company will train the right people.

"Currently we're looking for certified arborists, tree climbers, foremen, preferably with a CDL," Cassani said. "We could use a few more groundsmen, which is more of an entry-level position, so we're definitely open to bringing on people that are excited to get into the industry that may not have prior experience. Everyone had to get into it at some point in time, so if somebody is hungry and wants to learn, is excited about working outside and wants to learn to climb trees, I think we're a great company to work for. We provide a lot of safety policies and make sure that we do it the right way, efficient and productive, as well as being safe."

There are protective protocols during the pandemic.

"We don't shake hands with the customers any more, we're still meeting them on the properties but we keep our social distance, we stay six feet away," Cassani said. "The guys riding in the trucks ride no more than two people to a cab, we're using Clorox wipes on the trucks and making sure the gear is sanitized and clean. Because we work outdoors, it's a little easier than a lot of other industries to maintain that distance and keep going."

He says the crew is a close-knit one.

"We're a small company, about 25 employees, we take care of our own and we're very flexible," Cassani said. "We offer benefits, we have multiple positions available and I like to think the pay rate is extremely competitive or more so than most companies around here. There's only one way to learn the business and that's to get out here with us, soak up all the knowledge that we can give you, so we're definitely looking for all occupations in the arboricultural industry."
