Nevada's Legislature is part-time and only compensates legislators $130 per day while in session, so most of the state's legislators need full-time jobs.
Concerns have been raised about Nevada Assembly Majority Floor Leader Sandra Jauregui's role as a partner at Hilltop Public Solutions, which has provided consulting services to Vice President Kamala Harris.
Respected Nevada journalist Jon Ralston reported that Jauregui had been hired to a "mega-Dem-firm" on February 15, 2024. Additionally, the Nevada Globe reported on Jauregui's dual role as a statewide leader and a partner of the firm.Â
Nevada legislative rules mandate the disclosure of potential conflicts of interest. However, there have been numerous reports indicating that the Legislature lacks clear and enforced ethics regulations.
This became evident last year when several legislators voted on two 'Christmas tree' bills that together allocated $110 million to more than 70 non-profits. The legislators faced scrutiny surrounding their yes votes on non-profits they were employed by or associated with. Subsequently, they stepped down but gave other reasons for doing so.
On September 25, we emailed the Nevada Democrats asking for Jauregui's client list with Hilltop Public Solutions. We also inquired whether she would disclose any potential conflicts of interest in the upcoming session, as required by Assembly standing rules.
While the Nevada Democrats did not respond to our questions, they provided the following in-part statement of Jauregui's legislative accomplishments along with blasting Governor Joe Lombardo for his record with a comprehensive list of sources to support their claims.Â
"Leader Jauregui's work in the Legislature includes expanding reproductive rights, lowering the costs of housing and prescription drugs, and keeping our communities safe." - Nevada State Democratic Spokesperson Carlos Perez.
Jaurgui is defending her seat in Assembly District 41 against Republican challenger Raphael Arroyo.
