Life Skills - Learn-Grow-Reconnect

Domestic violence does not end when someone leaves, and a local program is offering a place to start again, one class at a time.

The Domestic Violence Resource Center is offering free monthly life skills classes designed to support people who have experienced domestic violence.

The classes are open to the community, and people do not need to be former DVRC clients to take part in the support groups, which are held several times a month.

The classes include support groups, a book club, educational workshops, and other sessions offered in a safe and supportive setting.

The programs focus on open conversations about trauma linked to domestic violence and include financial literacy groups aimed at helping people work toward financial independence, regardless of their situation.

“We know when survivors leave abusive situations, they often feel alone and that they’re restarting their entire life. Many times, they’re leaving with only the clothes on their back and limited resources,” said Sylvia Gonzalez, Director of Programs & Services of DVRC. “Our life skills programs are a key part of our wraparound services that allow us to support someone’s journey by offering spaces for them to work through their traumas. They can also learn what it takes to become financially independent or develop new coping skills when substance abuse was part of the cycle of violence.”

Life skills classes are led by DVRC staff and volunteers trained in trauma-informed care.

Classes are being offered in English and Spanish and are available both virtually and in person at DVRC’s temporary office at 1301 Cordone Avenue, Suite 180. People can choose the option that best fits their needs.

While construction continues on DVRC’s new purpose-built shelter, the organization is still providing resources at its temporary home, including legal help and emergency shelter assistance. The new shelter and resource center is expected to open in 2027 and will bring all DVRC services together under one roof.

Class schedules are updated monthly, and people can view upcoming sessions and register through DVRC’s website.
