As the war with Iran rages on, people in Reno are feeling the biggest impacts at the pump.
“It's ridiculous. I can't even afford to fill my tank no more,” Rebecca Currie said.
Currie said she spent $87 to fill her car with premium fuel on Monday.
Another person said she drives for DoorDash, so the price spike has had a profound impact on her job over the past few weeks.
“I was in Vegas at that time, and it was probably closer to $3 there. And I feel like here it has already skyrocketed $4 in one week,” said Desiree Feller.
2 News Nevada spoke to some drivers in Reno about how they're saving money on gas. Simon Solaegui said taking it easy and catching a breeze have improved his gas mileage.
“I try to, you know, keep my windows down and keep the RPMs low. Try to drive in a conservative manner, not to use too much gas,” Solaegui said.
Another person said he works from home, which by itself saves a lot of gas money. Still, he works around high prices as often as possible.
"Everyone's trying to save when they can. So, if I see high prices, I might drive an extra mile to save 50 cents,” said Morgan Gilliam.
Other drivers are considering a more drastic approach. Christy Hansen said the rising prices, mixed with the financial stress of being a college student, are making her think about buying a bike and ditching gas altogether.
“I'm actually thinking of selling my car eventually, but I don't know yet. And just trying to get around in another way,” she said.
Hansen said she works full-time, but she still needs low-income services from the University to stay afloat.
If all else fails, Gilliam recommends the tried-and-true method of filling up in Carson City.
“It might take 30 minutes, but you might save 30 dollars,” he said.
As of 6 p.m. Monday, the cheapest gas stations in Reno-Sparks are the Sinclair stations on Peckham Lane and Victorian Avenue. Both charge $4.15 for cash customers and $4.25 for card users. If you’re willing to drive out of your way, the One9 and Golden Gate on USA Parkway sit at $3.59 per gallon. In Fernley, the Pilot station has the same price.
Gasbuddy currently lists the cheapest station in Carson City as the Smith’s Fuel Center at $3.99. However, that price is as of Sunday. As of Monday, the cheapest is Country Store at $4.05.
