UPDATE 10:45 P.M.
Traffic is now being let through on I-80 westbound after the prior closure.
According to the Nevada 511 and the CHP Roadmap website, traffic is being let through.
Chains are still required going over the summit, according to the website.
UPDATE 10:17 P.M.
As of 10 p.m. on Sunday night, westbound Interstate 80 remains closed at the state line, with traffic being turned around Gold Ranch Road (Exit 1).
Eastbound I-80 remains open between Placer County and the state line, but chains are required.
California Highway Patrol said on social media traffic over Donner Summit is being held in both directions as of 9:15 p.m.
Dozens of drivers waited out the closure at Gold Ranch Casino in Verdi. One said she's trying to get home after a long road trip.
"I was in Chicago, so I've traveled for quite a few days," said Rebeca Quintana, from El Cerrito, California. "I thought (i-80) would be it. It was the shortest route ... But unfortunately, I've been here for I don't know how many hours anymore."
Quintana said she's been in the Reno area since 7 a.m. Sunday morning.
A family from the Bay Area said they visited the Reno area for the snow season and hope to return home for school on Monday.
"We looked through other nearby routes and they're all above seven hours, so we'd rather just wait," said Luis, from San Francisco.
Quintana said she has extra blankets and pillows in her van, so she doesn't have to get a last-minute hotel room like some folks, who have no other choice.
"I feel sorry for a lot of the families around here, and they have kids and to pay for our hotel right now and last minute is usually a lot more (expensive)," Quintana said.
Traffic is being turned around on I-80 west due to multiple spinouts.
