Carson City Schools kick off the 'Week of Respect' with several activities and discussions that focus on anti-bullying programs and practices this week and the next in an attempt to help curb bullying and provide a safe and respectful learning space.
The first week of October was proclaimed by the Governor of the State of Nevada as the 'Week of Respect', a call upon the media, educators, and appropriate government officials to bring awareness to Nevada's resident's information on ways to identify, and methods to prevent discrimination based on race and bullying and cyberbullying.
This year observance of the proclamation takes place September 30 through October 4.
The Carson City School District (CCSD) says it will ensure consistent implementation of anti-bullying programs and practices in all of its schools and environments with activities and events such as dress-up days, pledges, the giving of and receiving of compliments, and more throughout this week and the next.
They invite parents and members of the community to participate in the activities and discussions throughout the week at Bordewich Bray, Empire, Fremont, and Seeliger Elementary Schools. Carson High, Pioneer Academy, Carson Middle, Eagle Valley Middle, and Fritsch Elementary, schedules of events are included below.
They say that Mark Twain Elementary will participate and observe the 'Week of Respect' the week of October 7 through 11.
The CCSD says that throughout this week and next, class curriculum and social activities will center on the five standards of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) including self-management, self-awareness, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness.
Officials say that these events will prompt students to reflect on and share personal experiences of what respect means to them, how they give and receive respect, and how they react when they perceive they are being disrespected.
The 'Week of Respect' highlights skills and interactions that facilitate positive student relationships and empowers students to observe the impact they can make, simply by approaching each day from a place of treating others the way they wish to be treated.
The CCSD provided information about the Proclamation, Nevada Law NRS 388.122-135 to students and staff, which helped them more fully recognize bullying, how to report incidences when bullying occurs, and the steps the district will take when allegations of bullying have been made.
