Veterans in Northern Nevada are set to benefit from an enhanced healthcare system.

The congressional delegation from Northern Nevada has successfully urged President Biden to approve the construction of a new veterans hospital in Reno.

Senator Rosen, a member of the Armed Services Committee, stated that she advocated for President Biden to include the $224 million veterans hospital in Reno in the 2024 budget proposal.

The Nevada allocation is part of the $3.35 billion 'Fiscal Year 2024 Veterans Affairs Major Medical Facility Authorization Act,' which allocates federal funds for veteran medical facilities and services nationwide.

"This money had already been allocated to upgrade the current hospital, but as they did with the latest machines, X-ray machines, capabilities, operating rooms, technology, you name it: it would actually be more cost effective and so much better if we could build a new hospital, we took the funding for the initial upgrades, and these are the initial funding," said (D-NV) Senator Jacky Rosen.

The University of Nevada, Reno, is expected to be the location of the new veterans hospital. The hospital will be located along McCarran Boulevard, between Virginia Street and Evans Avenue. UNR argues that the location offers convenient access for veterans to nearby hospitals.

"About a 50-acre campus. It will start with the hospital. It grows over time, and it will be state of the art to serve everyone throughout northern Nevada, from Sacramento to Salt Lake and parts in between; it is the hospital for veterans to go to," said Rosen.

It would also expand education for students at the University of Nevada's medical and nursing schools, Nevada State Public Health Lab, and the School of Social Work.

"UNR is a medical school. It's a school of social work. Physical therapy, nursing. All of the jobs that come with the hospital. Being able to take your blood, take your x-ray, you name it; we're going to be able to train folks there. Bring more jobs, better jobs, and create this atmosphere there that will emerge with the university and be a great resource for our community," said Rosen.

The current hospital will remain open until the new one is ready.

The VA has told UNR they will need a new parking garage separate from the university.
