Democratic Presidential Candidate Cory Booker Visits Reno Area

Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker is scheduled to visit all four early voting states, including Nevada, over the next few weeks.

The New Jersey senator first spoke to a group of Latino voters in Sparks

"At a time when you see a lot more, unfortunately, racist situations, violence incidents, people lashing out against Latino communities, I wanted them to know my real authentic connection as a guy who was a mayor of a city with a large Latino population," Booker, D-New Jersey said.

The former mayor of Newark says the Latino community faces many of the same issues as other groups in America.

"Making ends meet," Booker said. "Why is it that people who are working in America often feel like they're falling behind with rents going up, prescription drugs going up."

After that event, he spoke in the California Building at Idlewild Park in Reno.

He says winning the Democratic nomination will take a grassroots effort and that's why he's making multiple stops and talking to different groups.

"I'm running to unite Americans," Booker said. "Regardless of what you say your political party is, we're not each other's enemy. We need each other. We've got to repair that sense of severed belonging."

This isn't the first trip Booker has made to northern Nevada. He stopped in Minden and Reno earlier this year. He has also made several stops in southern Nevada. He has family living in Las Vegas.

"I want to make sure people know that when I'm the president, all of Nevada is going to be the center," Booker said. "I'm in a state where my parents, grandparents...this state has been really good to us but northern Nevada does not get the attention it deserves."
