Las Vegas area schools won’t resume classroom instruction when the new semester starts next month.
Clark County school trustees cited fears of spreading the coronavirus and unanimously decided Tuesday to begin the 2020-2021 school year using distance education.
The vote came despite concerns about a shortage of laptops, lack of internet access for some students and the possibility of losing federal funds if schools don’t open.
District administrators considered two days of classroom attendance and three days of online instruction each week.
But the superintendent calls keeping the more than 350 campuses closed a matter of health and safety.Â
The Board added provisions to receive health and wellness updates every 30 days before determining a return to hybrid or face-to-face instruction.Â
The Reopening Our Schools plan also allows for hybrid telecommuting for district staff and licensed professionals where and when possible.
Classes start August 24th.Â
The board also voted on a professional development plan and instructional scheduling for secondary students.
