The Nevada volleyball team started off the 2018 season 1-0 after taking a four set victory over Northern Arizona, 3-1, on Friday, Aug. 24. The Lumberjacks took the first set 25-14 but the Pack took the next three, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-21.
Junior Jamila Minor put up a career high number of kills with 24 and had 71 total attempts, also a career high, in the noon matchup. Her previous high was 15 kills against UNLV last season. Joining Minor with a career match was sophomore Sam Hayward. Hayward saw her number of kills and attack percentage slashed after putting up 13 kills and a .481 hitting percentage.
As a team, the Wolf Pack saw a high number of digs with 91, good for second most digs in a single match. The 2005 team sits in first with 93 digs against Louisiana Tech. Along with the 91 digs, the Pack had 11 service aces, also the second most in a four set match with 12 service aces coming in 2005 against Akron.
The Pack got off to a slow start, only marking six kills in the first set but in the next three sets had at least 16 in each, for a total of 56 in the match.
The two teams fought hard in the second set, keeping the score within four points the entire time. The lead only changed twice but it was tied 11 different times. The Lumberjacks kept it within one late in the set, but the Pack finished on a three point run taking the win 25-22.
In the third set, Nevada recorded a .383 hitting percentage with 16 kills on just three errors and went on five different scoring runs to take a 2-1 set lead. Minor took command in the fourth set claiming four of the last five points to push the Pack on top, 25-21.
The Nevada volleyball team picked up its second win of the day after sweeping the Holy Cross Crusaders, (25-19, 25-17, 25-19), in the night cap of the UC Davis Invitational. The Wolf Pack moves to 2-0 on the season.
Sophomore Kayla Afoa picked up her first double-double of the season after recording 11 kills, tying her career high, and 13 digs. Junior Jamila Minor also collected a double-double on the night with 14 kills and 13 digs while carrying a .389 kill percentage. Sam Hayward, a sophomore outside hitter, claimed 13 kills of her own on 27 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage.
The Pack took a commanding lead in the first set on a seven point run that included two service aces from Minor seizing a 20-11 advantage. The Crusaders worked the margin down to four, 21-17, but Nevada held on to finish, 25-19.
Taking an early lead of 4-0 in the second set, Nevada maintained pace allowing head coach Lee Nelson to sub in a few newcomers including sophomore Kassie McGill, who delivered the final kill of the set.
In the third set, redshirt freshman, Hailey Maniglia came in and claimed three points, including the match point, off an assist from junior Dalyn Burns.
Burns had 39 assists and 9 digs on the night, while senior Mo Maluotoga racked up 36 digs for a 5.14 average.
Nevada continues tournament play in the UC Davis Invitational tomorrow, Aug. 25, when they take on host team, UC Davis, at 7 p.m. PT. The match will be live streamed on BigWest.tv or fans can follow the game play on Twitter @PackVB.
