'Tis the season for finding your new furry family member. Wednesday marks National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day.
SPCA of Northern Nevada is highlighting the importance of rescuing pets by waiving adoption fees and organizing special events, along with fun meet and greets to find your perfect pet match.
"Those they're interested in, they'll bring a little kennel card up to our matchmakers and we'll have a good conversation to see if the pet fits in with their lifestyle, what their needs are, and we'll try to match the best fit with the person and the pet," said Sydney Denham, SPCA Communications Supervisor. "We try to intake as many pets as possible. We're slowly rolling back into the process. We had a couple intakes this week where we transferred five puppies, a couple of adult dogs, and we had a transfer of cats that have already adopted."
We got up close and personal with some of the cats and dogs, getting to know their personalities a bit.
While some were slightly anxious, most were all about the love and attention, soaking up as many scratches and belly rubs as possible.
SPCA encourages people to come out, pay a visit, and find the right pet that matches their lifestyle. You just might fall in love and take one, two, or even three home.
A large responsibility of owning a pet is knowing how to properly care for them and provide the resources necessary to keep them healthy and happy.
SPCA offers services to help in that arena, making sure you are equipped with the basics before adopting your new fur baby.
"We also added a pet dental suite that will be available for our adoptable pets," said Denham. "And we made some renovations to our pet prep areas as well. So, really exciting things and we're grateful to be open again and we're really excited for the community to see these changes as well. There are so many rural rescues that need help, and you know today is just a really important day to highlight that fact, so we're grateful to be able to make an impact."
Most of these animals are owner returns or were abandoned on the streets, so they're grateful to find a forever home.
If you were unable to make it out on Wednesday, not to worry. You can make any day a pet adoption day. The most rewarding part of the process is saving a life and giving a home to the homeless.
