The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced that new lane shifts will be in place starting July 21.

The project, which is working to widen and improve more than one mile of I-80 between Keystone Ave and McCarran Boulevard, first started in September 2024.

Beginning on the morning of July 21, drivers in the area can expect to see the following changes:

  • Eastbound lanes of I-80 will be shifted in the W. McCarran Blvd area, transferring drivers to the newly-paved section of interstate
  • Drivers should expect a little bumpiness as they transition from the old to the new interstate surface
  • Speeds are reduced to 55mph through the entire work zone

Update (5/12/2025, 1:05 p.m.):

Beginning Monday, May 12 and continuing through late May, drivers on I-80 in west Reno will notice a couple new changes to the existing project between McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue.

While paving takes place in the closed median, the McCarran Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound I-80 will be closed nightly from 9:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. on weeknights. Officials say periodic weekend evening ramp closures may take place as well.

In addition to the ramp closure, interstate lanes will be intermittently reduced to a minimum of one lane in each direction at times, between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. on weekdays.

These changes are in addition to already-established lane shifts and speed reductions.

Update (11/27 1:13 p.m.):

Temporary overnight lane reductions and closures will begin on Sunday, December, 8 on Stoker Avenue underneath I-80 in west Reno as NDOT continues to repave and widen the highway.

The following changes are scheduled to take place beginning on December 8 through January 6 on Stoker Avenue between Stardust and W. 4th Streets.

NDOT says nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sundays through Friday mornings lanes will be reduced with traffic flaggers alternating directions of traffic.

They say that beginning on January 6 through the summer of 2025, Stoker Avenue will be completely closed between Stardust and W. 4th Streets, including the west side sidewalk to all pedestrians, who will be detoured to the east side sidewalk.

NDOT says that all the nearby businesses will remain open and accessible during the Stoker Avenue closures.

NDOT says the Stoker Avenue closure is needed as crews place temporary construction barriers and supports, and begin removing and expanding the south bridge.

Update (9/27 1:10 p.m.):

Lane reductions and overnight ramp closures will begin Monday, September 30 on Interstate 80 in west Reno.

Beginning Monday through mid-2026, more than one mile of I-80 will be repaved, widened, and improved between west McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue.

Interstate drivers can anticipate moderate travel delays through the work zone.

At least two interstate lanes will remain open during the daytime hours, but lanes will be reduced to a minimum of one lane between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. on weekdays.

Drivers can also expect to see intermittent overnight ramp closures of the west McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue ramps to I-80 between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Sunday evenings through Friday mornings.

No two consecutive ramps will be closed in the same direction, and detour routes will be marked.

Stoker Avenue will be closed for an extended period underneath I-80 between West Fourth Street and Stardust Street, with business and pedestrian access available.

NDOT will provide notification in advance of that closure.
