The BLM says the 3,487-acre Cherry Fire 53 miles south of Elko in the Cherry Springs Canyon is now fully contained.Â
The BLM says someone cutting wood with a chainsaw started the fire Monday afternoon.Â
The BLM says to be careful while outside. They offer these tips:
• Spark arresters are required on all portable gasoline powered equipment. This includes tractors, harvesters, chainsaws, weed-eaters and mowers. Use the recommended fuel grade and don’t top it off.Â
• Mow before 10 a.m. but never when it is windy or excessively dry. Metal blades can create sparks when striking rocks and start a fire.Â
• When using equipment, keep a shovel and fire extinguisher close.Â
• Don’t park your vehicle in dry grass or brush. Hot exhaust pipes and mufflers can start a fire.Â
• Practice safe towing, as dragging chains throw sparks. Use appropriate safety pins and hitch ball to secure chains.Â
• Properly maintain vehicle brakes.Â
No structures have been lost to the Cherry Fire and no road closures or evacuations are currently in effect.
