The Bureau of Land Management says Trego Hot Springs in the Black Rock National Conservation Area may pose a severe risk to human health, after the water has tested positive for disease-causing organisms.
Officials said the hot springs, located 20 miles northeast of Gerlach, tested positive for E. Coli, Fecal Coliforms and Vibrio Cholera. They said spring waters generally become contaminated when exposed to wildlife and livestock.
Officials are warning the public to avoid bathing or any type of contact with the hot springs.
They said in the past, signs have been posted at the springs to warn people of contamination, but those signs are occasionally vandalized or torn down.
