Since 2008, her father Jamie has been Britney's conservator, managing her finances and almost every aspect of her day-to=day life.Â
He was appointed after Britney went through an apparent mental crisis.Â
"People go through the conservatorship process most often because they're compromised and they need help and the first thing that we, as lawyers, and the courts, as jurors, try to do is make sure that people are protected," explained Scott Rahn, a managing partner at RMO LLP.Â
In 2019, another court order forced Jamie Spears to share control of Britney's finances and estimated $60 million fortune with an estate management firm.
Now after 13 years, the 39-year-old pop star wants her father out of the picture.
According to the New York Times, Spears claims the conservatorship restricts everything, from whom she dates to the color of her kitchen cabinets.
"I would have thought that the conservatorship would have been brief -- maybe one or two years in order for her to be protected, get help and then restore her freedom. I don't understand why it's gone on so long," said Christopher Melcher, the Spears' family attorney.Â
The legal fight has highlighted the "Free Britney" movement, where fans have rallied in the singer's defense.Â
Representatives of Jamie Spears say he has been a dutiful father, acting out of love for his daughter and that the conservatorship is to protect Britney from exploitation.Â
