Buffalo Snow Causing Roof Collapses, Other Damages

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Roofs are starting to collapse under the weight of all of the snow that's been falling in the Buffalo, New York, area. This, as another storm brings the area's three-day snowfall total to six feet or more.

Roof collapses are reported around the region. And homeowners and store employees have been climbing onto roofs to shovel off the snow and reduce the danger.

A fire lieutenant in a Buffalo suburb says more than 30 people were evacuated from several mobile home parks where roofs were buckling. He says more than a dozen buildings and carports collapsed, along with a metal warehouse operated by a Christmas decorations company. Damage was estimated in the millions.

The snow is the immediate concern -- but there are also worries about what happens when it all melts. Warning temperatures and rain are expected this weekend. And that raises the possibility of flooding, and an even heavier load pressing down on roofs -- where snow could absorb the rain like a blanket.
