In a video narrated by Tom Hanks, the Cleveland Indians major league baseball team announced their new name: The Cleveland Guardians.

The change will take effect at the end of the 2021 season.

Guardians was selected to represent the "Guardians of Traffic" seen on each side of Cleveland's Hope Memorial Bridge.

Team owner and chairman Paul Dolan said in a statement "Cleveland has and always will be the most important part of our identity. Therefore, we wanted a name that strongly represents the pride, resiliency and loyalty of Clevelanders."

Dolan said they know that this change will be difficult for some and the transition will take time.

Cleveland Indians, President, Business Operations Brian Barren said they let fan insight drive their decision.

Months of discussions to change the name were triggered by complaints from people who consider the team being named Indians to be racist.

The Guardians will be the fifth name in franchise history joining the Blues (1901), Bronchos (1902), Naps (1903-1914) and Indians (1915-2021).
