The Washoe County Health District says some students at Coral Academy of Science Elementary are sick with a gastrointestinal illness. A representative at the health district doesn't know how many students are affected at the charter school.
Gastrointestinal infections are viral, bacterial or parasitic infections that cause gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract involving both the stomach and the small intestine. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
There's no immediate word on if the middle and/or high school is affected.

Due to the recent influx and increase in gastrointestinal illnesses (GI) among our students and staff, the Washoe County Health District has put Coral Academy of Science Elementary on “outbreak” status. Over the last few days, there has been a dramatic decline in attendance due to this illness. When the attendance rate dropped below 70% present, Coral Academy Elementary chose to close our doors for the remainder of this week (Thursday, 11/21 and Friday, 11/22) to deep clean our facility. Our janitorial staff will be working diligently to disinfect the entire facility, room by room.
We strongly encourage our families to take extra precautions at home as well by disinfecting any items that your student(s) brings to school on a daily basis (backpacks, lunch boxes, uniforms, etc.) or may have brought home recently.
Champions Childcare will also be closed during this time as not to expose any students or staff while this deep cleaning process is being conducted.
The Middle and High School campuses will be in session on these days. School will resume for the Elementary campus on Monday, November 25th.
We do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our families, but whole-heartedly thank you for your support and cooperation during this time.
