On Thursday, a judge sentenced a Reno man to 50 years in prison in connection to a fatal DUI case.

36-year-old Eduardo Rodriguez-Viurquiz plead guilty to one count each of DUI Resulting in Death, DUI Resulting in Substantial Bodily Harm, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death or Personal Injury.

Rodriguez-Viurquiz was sentenced in January 2021, two years after the initial crime that happened on January 27th, 2019. The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to a crash on I-580 just past the Peckham Lane overpass. Their investigation showed that 19-year-old Megan Dube and 20-year-old Korbin Preston were possibly checking their Jeep for mechanical issues when they pulled off the road on to the shoulder.

Shortly after, officials say a red Nissan Titan driven by Rodriguez-Viurquiz came from behind and hit the Jeep. Preston was standing in the shoulder behind the Jeep and died instantly.

The force of the crash threw Dube into into the travel lanes of I-580, where she was run over by another vehicle. Crews took Dube to Renown with life-threatening injuries, where she stayed for 44 days. She survived.

Rodriguez-Viurquiz fled the scene on foot, but was found quickly and arrested by Reno Police Department officers helping NHP.

Toxicology later showed RodriguezVuirquiz’ Blood Alcohol Content was approximately .310 at the time of the crash. Rodriguez-Viurquiz’ blood also contained methamphetamine and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Rodriguez-Viurquiz was determined to be from Mexico and undocumented by federal immigration officials and is expected to be deported at the end of his prison term.

In a release from the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office they wrote: "At the sentencing hearing, Deputy District Attorney Shannon M. Bryant argued that the agreed upon sentence was fair only in the legal sense, given the laws of Nevada and Rodriguez-Viurquiz’ acceptance of responsibility, but that none of the tragedy suffered in this case could ever be described as fair in any other sense."

Bryant credited Dube’s survival to the quick action and response of NHP, REMSA paramedics and other motorists who stopped to help.

Nevada Highway Patrol has identified the driver arrested on DUI after this weekend's fatal crash on I-580 south near the Kietzke off-ramp, near Moana Lane.

NHP says troopers were dispatched to the multi-car crash around 4:45 a.m. on Sunday.

A preliminary investigation shows that a red Nissan Titan pickup was heading south on I-580 south of Moana. The driver, identified as 34-year-old Eduardo Rodriguez-Viurquiz struck the rear of a red Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV near the left-hand travel lane. The Jeep stopped in the left-hand travel lane facing northeast. The Nissan Titan stopped in the left-hand travel lanes facing east.

Shortly thereafter, a second crash occurred when a white Toyota Tacoma pickup struck the left rear of the Jeep and the left side of the Nissan. NHP says 20-year-old Korbin Preston of Wellington died on scene.

They say the female occupant of the Jeep was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. She remains in critical condition at this time.

After the initial crash, the Nissan driver ran away from the scene, but was found a short time later by Reno Police near the Moana Lane off-ramp.

Rodriguez-Viurquiz was booked into the Washoe County Jail on Sunday on numerous charges.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is seeking additional witnesses to this crash, particularly any witnesses that observed any or all of the vehicles prior to impact.  If you were a witness to this incident, or have any information regarding this collision, contact Sergeant Chris Kelly of the Nevada Highway Patrol Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.) at 775-687-9649 or ckelly@dps.state.nv.us
