The Nevada Highway Patrol has recognized the first woman promoted to the rank of major.

Susan Aller-Schilling was honored at a ceremony at the highway patrol's headquarters Thursday afternoon. She first joined the Department of Public Safety as a officer with the Department of Parole and Probation in 1998.

She says she had a lot of help rising through the ranks but is proud to be a trailblazer for women. "It's an honor and a privilege to achieve this rank, there's a lot of females who paved the way for me. And I'm going to carry the torch for those who will follow me."

Major Aller-Schilling is replacing Major Brian Sanchez who was recently promoted and transferred to Carson City.

The highway patrol also recognized Trooper Bill Murwin, who was promoted to the rank of sergeant today.
