Joyce Woodhouse

Former state senator Joyce Woodhouse has died at 82 years old.

Woodhouse represented parts of Clark County and Henderson, first elected to represent District 5 in 2006. She was also an educator who worked as a lobbyist for the Nevada State Education Association.

Nevada leaders are reacting to the news:

Governor Joe Lombardo

"I’m very saddened to hear the passing of Joyce Woodhouse. She was an unparalleled advocate for Nevada’s children, helping us pass bipartisan education reforms that will brighten the future of our state’s next generation. As a long time educator and legislator, Joyce’s work ethic was unmatched serving in leadership roles for multiple key education commissions long after her retirement as she fought to make Nevada a better place to live. Donna and I are praying for her family and friends during this difficult time. Joyce’s contributions will make an impact on Nevada for many years to come."

Senator Jacky Rosen

"I’m extremely saddened to hear the news of State Senator Joyce Woodhouse’s passing. Joyce brought her years of experience as an elementary school teacher to the Nevada Senate and was a leading advocate for our students and public schools. Our entire state is better off thanks to her service. She will be dearly missed."

Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of former State Senator Joyce Woodhouse. To those of us who worked with her, Joyce was much more than a colleague. She was a kind, yet strong force within our caucus, a consistent presence during tough times, and a tireless advocate for children and all people of Nevada. To many of us, she was our very own Vivid Dancer Damselfly - steady, graceful, and impossible to forget.

Joyce often said her heart always belonged in the classroom. Her many years in the Clark County School District guided her work in the Legislature. When she joined the Senate in 2006, she brought the determination and the patience of a lifelong educator. She knew that every budget line was more than a number; it was a promise to a child, a senior, or a working family.

In our caucus, Joyce mentored many leaders over the years. She showed that real strength comes from being prepared and that progress depends on the conversations had around the toughest issues. People turned to her when a bill was stalled or when things felt uncertain. Her door was always open, and her advice was practical, thoughtful, and rooted in her deep love for Nevada.

Her induction into the Senate Hall of Fame was a fitting recognition of a lifetime spent serving others with integrity, compassion, and unwavering purpose. Joyce leaves behind a legacy that will continue to shape Nevada for generations.

We send our heartfelt condolences to her family and the many Nevadans whose lives are better because Joyce Woodhouse chose to serve. Even in her passing, her voice will continue to echo in every school hallway and every community she worked to improve.

Senator Woodhouse - your lesson plan is complete, and you have passed with the highest honors. Rest peacefully."
