Kids Café is Open for WCSD Spring Break

It's Giving Tuesday, a global movement dedicating to giving back to our local communities, and people are encouraged to donate to their favorite charities.

"We think that it's important for people to get involved in their local community," said Jocelyn Lantrip with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. "This is a great way to do it, to give to whatever charity inspires you."

This year, the Food Bank will be using these donations to help with the child hunger problem that's only gotten worse during the pandemic.

"Feeding America did a study that shows the effect of coronavirus on food insecurity, because it's been staggering across the nation," Lantrip said. "And Nevada is projected to be the worst state in the nation for child hunger, at 32.3% by the end of this year, so we really want to make sure we have the resources to make sure those kids get fed."

Giving Tuesday donations will help fund the Kids Cafe program, school lunches, school-based food pantries, and the Mobile Harvest program, which is busier that it's ever been.

The Food Bank is serving record numbers of families right now, and today those donations will get a boost from a local construction company, one that's been helping the Food Bank for years.

"We have a great matching donation from John Anderson Construction that's making us able to triple the impact, so it's a pretty great way to get involved," Lantrip said. "It's very easy, just to go fbnn.org."
