Buying a home can be a complicated process, so on Saturday, the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals is sponsoring a housing summit for veterans and their families.Â
The summit is free and will include several services such as VA home loan assistance, credit counseling, home loan pre-approval and down payment assistance.Â
The goal is to get more veterans into homes of their own, like Chris Geraci, a U.S. Air Force and Nevada Air National Guard veteran. When he started thinking about buying a home, he secured a VA loan, but needed support navigating the complex homebuying process.
"Without the VA programs, we wouldn't be where we are today," said Chris Geraci.
Now Geraci calls a home his very own.Â
"Every day when I walk through the day, I think to myself, wow, this is our house. This is where we live," said Geraci.Â
He hopes other veterans like him can reach the same achievement. But before veterans and their families can, they need to know their financial options and resources.
William Process, the President of VAREP said, "You can get grants back. You can get money to help pay for your closing costs through some of these, right now you can get a great interest rate if you're a vet."
The Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals is on a mission to educate veterans about what's available to them.Â
"Anytime you sign that piece of paper, you put your life on the line for our nation. You deserve these benefits," said Process.Â
At the veterans housing summit, the home buying process will be discussed with special classes.Â
"How to pick a realtor. What to look for. What a realtor expects from you. What you should know when you want to buy a house," said Process.Â
Geraci adds, "Every veteran deserves a place of their own. It is truly an amazing feeling to have keys and walk in everyday."
The Veterans Housing Summit will not just be a one and done kind of event. Organizers say they will follow up with you in the coming months to help you along the way so you can get into a home.Â
The event will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Reno Sparks Association of Realtors Office, located at 5650 Riggins Court.Â
