We are just over a week away from one of the sweetest fundraisers in the area - the Genoa Candy Dance. This will be the event's 95th year.
You could say they have found just the right recipe for success. It's all in their candy.
"We've been doing this for so long we have it down. We went through $2,000 pounds of sugar this year!" says one of their veteran candymakers, Jacie Peterson. "We do go through a lot of sugar and a lot of nuts and a lot of butter. Every recipe we use takes a pound of butter just to get going. So when we shop for supplies it is one serious shopping trip to Costco. We have cart after cart after cart to get all the ingredients."
But it's worth it in so many ways.
"We always sell out of the mixed boxes first. Everyone loves these. They have a little of everything in them. They sell for $13 a piece and they go fast."
Money goes to the town's coffers. They actually fuel the town on this two-day homemade candy and crafts sale...every year. Last year they made $120,000 to keep the town going.
This year's Candy Dance is September 27th and 28th.
