Republican state Sen. Greg Brower is formally resigning his northern Nevada seat after announcing months ago that he wouldn't seek re-election.
      Â
Brower submitted a letter to Gov. Brian Sandoval on Monday, saying he was resigning the post effective Feb. 20. Senate Republican Caucus spokeswoman Jodi Stephens says Brower is accepting a Washington D.C.-based appointment in the U.S. Department of Justice.
      Â
Brower served as the U.S. Attorney for Nevada for two years before he was appointed to the state Senate in 2011.

The race for his Washoe County seat is one of the three most-watched in the state Senate, which leans Republican by a narrow 11-10 margin. Republican leaders have endorsed former Assemblywoman Heidi Gansert for the post, while Democrats have endorsed Reno attorney Devon Reese. (AP)
