The "Welcome to Nevada" signs posted on our major freeways and state highways will be getting a new look with the help from some young Nevadans.
State officials say the sign is out of date and doesn't reflect what Nevada has to offer. So, graphic design students are being challenged of create a new, friendly welcome sign for travelers.
"It could have gone to a professional graphic designer, it could have gone to a big firm or paying a lot of money for this. But what a great a way to get a student involved, to get a student to proudly say I did that. Something they can put on their resume when they look for a job later."
Governor Sandoval, along with the Nevada Departments of Transportation, Education and Tourism have all teamed up to make this opportunity possible for students.
Three finalists from each region will be chosen and then it's up to the public to pick the winning design.
Right now there are 50 entry points where the new signs design would go up.
"It's really a way to get people to understand there is more out here than what they may think We hope these signs will create when tourists enter it,” says Bethany Drysdale, Nevada Department of Tourism.
The contest will run through March 25, and a winning design will be chosen in April.
May will be when we will start to see the new signs on Nevada roadways.
