Hobby Lobby says it is raising its minimum wage to $17 an hour starting October 1.

The CEO says the reason for the move is "because this year has presented so many challenges to our employees.”

The Oklahoma-based company said it last hiked its full-time minimum wage to $15 an hour in 2014.

In 2009, the company was one of the first to establish a nationwide minimum wage that was significantly higher than the federal wage, which still stands at just $7.25 an hour.
