5/8/2017
Reno Aces shortstop, Ketel Marte, has been awarded the first Pacific Coast League “Player of the Week” award for the period of May 1 – May 7, the League announced today. Marte is the third Aces player this season to take home a Player of the Week honor (Christian Walker, Zack Godley).
The 23-year-old switch hitter has received numerous accolades in his time through the minor leagues. Marte was named a mid-season All-Star in both 2014 (Jackson) and 2015 (Tacoma), was named a 2014 MiLB.com Organization All-Star (Seattle) and was a 2015 Futures Game Selection (World). Since the beginning of the season, Marte has been on fire – boasting a .419 batting average through 28 games. Marte leads all of baseball (MLB and MiLB) in total hits thus far in 2017: Ketel Marte, Reno Aces – 52, Ryan Zimmerman, Washington Nationals – 47, Starlin Castro, New York Yankees – 43, Daniel Murphy, Washington Nationals – 43, and Amed Rosario, Las Vegas 51’s – 43.
During the week, Marte led the Aces (5-2) in average (.500), runs scored (8), triples (2), stolen bases (3), on-base percentage (.581), and OPS (1.350). In a recent four-game stretch against the Salt Lake Bees, Reno scored 49 runs on 66 hits (26 extra-base hits) to earn their first series sweep of the season.
After a victory yesterday against the Sacramento River Cats, the Aces will square off two more times in Sacramento before returning to Greater Nevada Field on Thursday.
