The main U.N. body promoting women’s rights has reaffirmed the 1995 road map to achieve gender equality.
The declaration approved by the Commission on the Status of Women pledges to step up implementation of the 150-page platform for action, amid warnings of rising gender inequality and conservative push-back against its far-reaching agenda.
The declaration was approved by consensus Monday at U.N. headquarters at a meeting making the 25th anniversary of the U.N. women’s conference in Beijing.
The scope of the meeting was drastically cut back because of the spread of the new coronavirus.
The commission's annual meeting with about 12,000 people has been postponed.
