Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib came out as gay on Monday.Â
In a post on Instagram, Nassib made a video and a post, as well announcing a partnership with The Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that focuses on suicide prevention in the LGBTQ+ community.
"Only until recently, thanks to my family and friends, especially Connor, Cason and Francis, did it seem possible for me to say publicly and proudly that I'm gay," Nassib wrote in the post.Â
Nassib said he has been greeted with the utmost respect and acceptance.Â
Nassib is a 6-foot-7 walk-on that has previously played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. He played college football at Penn State.Â
Nassib also said in his post that he is a private person and asks the media to give him space.Â
"I am also incredibly thankful for the NFL, my coaches and fellow players for their support. I would not have been able to do this without them," Nassib writes.Â
Nassib is reportedly the only active gay player in the NFL currently.Â
Las Vegas Raiders took to Twitter after the announcement, saying "Proud of you, Carl."Â
