Reno's own Sgt. Thomas "Trey" Humphrey will compete in the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado on Thursday.

The Mono Skier X is composed of eight racers, and all competitors are amputees, paralyzed or visually impaired.

Sgt. Humphrey attended the University of Nevada until 2005, when he joined the U.S. Marines. He served two combat tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.

During his final deployment in 2010, Sgt. Humphrey stepped on an improvised explosive device while attempting to help a wounded soldier.

He lost part of his right leg and required more than 20 surgeries.

Sgt. Humphrey was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his heroism.

This year will be his first time competing in the Winter X Games, having previously competed as a member of Team USA's Development Squad.

Humphrey is ranked in the top 40 in four international events, and won a gold medal at the Huntsman Cup NorAm in 2014.

The semifinal races take place on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 12:30 p.m. All heats will be televised on ESPN 3.
