A local man has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for trying to kill his grandmother last year.

Michael Kevin O'Day Jr. pleaded guilty to attempted murder earlier this year.

He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for that count - and another four years for resisting a public officer.

The judge ruled that those counts must be served consecutively.

O'Day Jr. is eligible for parole for both counts.

Authorities say O'Day Jr. tried to suffocate his 88-year-old grandmother with a plastic bag, then hit her over the head with a brick-like object, in early November 2020.

After being stopped by police, authorities say he tried to drive away with a Reno Police Officer hanging out of the car window.
