On Wednesday, the Bras for a Cause Fashion Show returned to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The show happened downtown near the Reno Arch.

Cari Herington, the executive director of the Nevada Cancer Coalition, says, "Bras for a Cause was just an idea that some of our team members came up with last year. So really, the purpose of this event is to honor those that we've lost to breast cancer or celebrate those that have survived. And really raise awareness and funds for screening and mammograms."

The Nevada Cancer Coalition says its goal for the month is to paint Nevada pink, and that starts with lighting the Reno Arch in pink for the month.

While this is the second year for the event, for years the Reno Arch has lit up pink for the month, and the Vegas Welcome Sign will be following the trend.

The money raised at the event goes into a fund that supports mammograms for those in our community who cannot pay for screening.

The models participating in the event might surprise you.

Herington tells us, "We have two of our fabulous fraternities from the University of Nevada, Reno. And these amazing young men will be modeling these beautiful pieces of art and walking the runway to show them off."

There were no limits to how creative you could be while designing a bra.

"No major rules," said Herington. "We did have a preferred bra size given our models this evening, but no major rules really. Whatever filled someone's heart, whatever spoke to them. You'll see or hear about some of our bras that were created in memory of someone, or someone that might be going through treatment right now. We also have bras with amazing reminders about breast cancer and breast cancer awareness."

She adds, "Bras have been decorated and donated from across the community by members and organizations that have designed and created amazing works of art."

Herington says events like these are important for everyone.

"For survivors, it's a way to honor their journey and allow them to tell their story and help get the word out about screening and raise awareness," she said.
