CHP says I-80 over Donner Summit is back open to passenger cars in both directions with chain controls in place, and that trucks are being allowed through in the westbound lanes with heavy chain controls; however, trucks are still being held in the eastbound lanes.

Mt. Rose Hwy is still closed for a second day after a snowstorm hit our area on Tuesday. There's no immediate word on when the roadway will reopen.

Be careful driving as roads may be icy.

Meanwhile, our major winter storm is winding down, with the steadiest snow now south of I-80. Even as the snowfall tapers off, slick roads and travel delays will continue through the day with temperatures staying well below freezing. Most areas will get a bit of a break to dig out, but a few lingering snow showers could still bring up to 3 inches near the Sierra and parts of northeast California.

Another fast-moving system arrives early Thursday. While not as powerful as the last storm, it will be cold enough for snow at all elevations and will add to travel impacts. The heaviest snow looks focused along the Sierra crest and northeast California, where a foot or more is possible near the crest, with several inches down to lake level around the Lake Tahoe Basin and western Mono County. Snow begins early Thursday morning and continues through the evening, with the potential for brief, intense snow bands producing snowfall rates over an inch per hour Thursday afternoon.
