CHP Truckee is warning about possible chain controls for the upcoming storm in the Sierra.
In a Facebook post, authorities warn drivers to be prepared for snowy conditions at Donner Pass, Monday through Wednesday.
The storm could bring up to 12 inches of snow over Donner Summit.
According to the CHP website, at the R1 status, chains are required on all vehicles except passenger vehicles. Light-duty trucks under 6,000 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires on at least two drive wheels, are also required with chains.
Chains also have to be carried by vehicles using snow tires. Vehicles with towing trailers must have chains on one drive axle. Trailers with brakes must have chains on at least one axle.
The R2 status states chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels.
The CHP website also says Four-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas.
R3 status says chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles, no exceptions.
CHP also warns on its website that drivers must stop and put on chains when highway signs indicate chains are required.
Adding that, you can be cited and fined if drivers don't. There is about a mile between chains required signs and the checkpoint to install your chains.
