The U.S. Forest Service has implemented enhanced fire restrictions across National Forest lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin, effective Tuesday, in response to ongoing wildfire risks.
Under the new rules, campfires using wood, charcoal, pellets, or any other solid fuels are only allowed in permanently installed fire rings located in designated campgrounds and recreation areas listed in the Forest Order’s Exhibits A and B. Campfires are now prohibited in Blackwood Canyon, Luther Pass, and Watson Lake campgrounds.
“The Forest Service’s number one priority in the Lake Tahoe Basin is to protect our neighborhoods, communities, and forests from wildfire,” said Fire Chief Carrie Thaler. “High visitation, dry vegetation (fuels) conditions, above average wildfire potential, along with increased need for firefighting resources across the country, shaped our decision to implement these enhanced fire restrictions.”
Devices powered by gas, kerosene, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel, including stoves, lanterns, and campfire pits with on-off switches or valves, may still be used, but only in the developed recreation sites listed in the Forest Order.
The enhanced restrictions also apply to several activities beyond campfires:
Smoking is prohibited except inside an enclosed car or while stopped in a cleared area at least three feet in diameter.
Operating internal combustion engines, such as generators and off-highway vehicles, is not allowed off paved, gravel, or dirt National Forest System roads and trails, except the Sand Pit Off-Highway Vehicle Area and boats on water surfaces.
Welding or using acetylene or other open-flame torches is also restricted.
Violating the restrictions may result in a fine of up to $5,000 for individuals or $10,000 for organizations, imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
The Forest Service notes that fire restrictions may also apply to state and private lands in the Lake Tahoe area. For the most up-to-date information, the public is encouraged to consult the Fire Restrictions Around the Tahoe Basin map.
