A Gardnerville woman has been found guilty of a number of financial crimes stemming from the embezzlement of money from a South Lake Tahoe construction company.
Between November 2019 and May 2023, Kami Power embezzled more than $1.4 million from a construction company she was working for, according to a release from the City of South Lake Tahoe.
Power used the money to buy two houses, several new cars, ATVs, a horse, and a $29,000 Hawaii vacation.
What started as a local investigation after South Lake Tahoe Police were contacted by the owners of the company grew into a federal prosecution as the magnitude of the embezzlement became clear, with the case ultimately being picked up by the Department of Justice.
Power was found guilty of 11 counts of wire fraud, three counts of bank fraud, and three counts of aggravated identity theft.
She is facing a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count of wire fraud, 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine for each count of bank fraud, and a mandatory two-year sentence on each count of aggravated identity theft.
Power is scheduled to be sentenced on February 27 of next year.
