A hiker was found dead on Mt. Whitney on Monday after parting ways with another hiker the previous day.

Two hikers began climbing around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday. The next day, around 3:30 p.m., near 12,500 feet, one hiker decided to turn back while the other kept going, according to a Facebook post from Inyo County Search and Rescue.

The second hiker failed to return by the next morning, the Inyo County Sheriff's Office was contacted, and search and rescue operations began.

The hiker was found on the north face of Mt. Whitney, below the Final 400 on the Mountaineers Route, and it was confirmed that they were dead.

The incident occurred within Tulare County jurisdiction, and proper notification was made to the Tulare County Sheriff's Office.
