Federal and state officials are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to eggs, with the investigation currently open, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
As of the latest update, 95 people in 14 states have fallen ill, including three cases in Nevada and 73 in California. Eighteen people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported.
The outbreak is linked to Country Eggs, LLC, which issued a recall on August 27 for its Large Brown Cage Free “Sunshine Yolks” eggs. CDC, FDA, and public health officials advise that any recalled eggs in homes or businesses should be thrown away or returned to the store.
People who may have consumed the recalled eggs should watch for symptoms such as diarrhea with a fever over 102°F, diarrhea lasting more than three days that is not improving, bloody diarrhea, excessive vomiting, or signs of dehydration, and contact a healthcare provider if these occur.
Businesses are instructed not to sell or serve the recalled eggs and to thoroughly clean and sanitize any surfaces or equipment that may have come into contact with them.
According to the CDC, most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps within 6 hours to 6 days of exposure. Illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment. Children under 5, adults over 65, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to experience severe illness.
For state-specific case information, contact the relevant state health department.
