Athletes in the Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District will stay with the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association for now, after the school board adopted a new stay agreement.
In 2025, the NIAA made policy changes over student-athlete eligibility based on biological sex, which conflicted with California laws protecting gender identity.
The California Department of Education then ordered the school district to transition all athletic programs to their state's programs.
Since then, challenges have been filed that could impact that move legally.
Due to that, the school district, the California Department of Education, and a law firm representing a coalition of community stakeholders all agreed on a temporary legal pause.
This means the TTUSD will stay with the NIAA for now, instead of transitioning to the California Interscholastic Federation.
