Residents of Kings Beach reported a large bonfire this week in the area above the North Shore community, and the U.S. Forest Service is taking the opportunity to remind people that bonfires are never allowed on National Forest lands.

It happened in the area of Commonwealth Drive and Lake Vista Road, according to a Facebook post from the U.S. Forest Service - Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

When LTBMU Fire Prevention responded, they found large chunks of burned pallets, ash, and debris.

In their post, they say the fire could have easily spread into the forest toward Martis Peak, and beyond.

Pallets should never be burned, according to the LTBMU, because they are typically made of hardwood, which burns very hot and can create lots of embers that can be carried by the wind for miles.

Burned pallets also pose additional dangers to the public because they leave behind nails and staples that can injure people and pets, and puncture tires, leaving drivers stranded.

The LTBMU is asking for the public's help in identifying those responsible for the bonfire. Anyone with information is urged to email the details to sm.fs.paltbmu@usda.gov.
