Prescribed burning US Forest Service

Conditions permitting, fire and fuels personnel from the Sierraville Ranger District of the US Forest Service will begin prescribed pile burning on 42 acres of the Tahoe National Forest northeast of Little Truckee Summit on Wednesday.

Officials say that smoke seen during pile burning is normal and can stay around the area for a few days, depending on the size of the project and conditions during a burn.

Smoke from today's burn might be seen during the day and could settle into the valleys overnight from the Highway 89 corridor between Onion Valley and Kyburz Flat, but it should lift by Thursday.

Crews are conducting this prescribed burn to decrease existing fire hazards, helping to prevent and reduce the impacts of future fires in that area, improve wildlife habitats, and reintroduce fire into a fire-adapted ecosystem.
