As winter weather approaches, officials across Nevada and neighboring California are urging drivers to prepare for snow, ice, and even possible chain controls on mountain passes, especially over the Sierra.
Agencies from both states are sharing updates and safety reminders as crews gear up for the first significant storms of the season.

In a post on Facebook, CHP Truckee warned that “snow is falling, roads are slick, and we’ve already got vehicles taking detours into the brush,” urging drivers, “if you’re headed this way, slow down and give yourself extra space.”
CHP’s District 3 also reminded travelers to carry chains when driving over Donner Summit.
Chain controls requirements have been reinstated after briefly reduced on Mt. Rose Highway as of 1:45 p.m. on October 13.
In Alpine County, the California Highway Patrol announced that Caltrans will temporarily close several Sierra mountain passes due to storm conditions.
State Route 89 (Monitor Pass) will be closed from Monday, October 13, through Thursday, October 16. State Route 4 (Ebbetts Pass) and State Route 108 (Sonora Pass) are also scheduled to close during the same period.
Caltrans says the closures will allow crews to perform snow removal and maintenance on the roadways.
