Lots of people have been taking advantage of the beautiful weather on Memorial Day while honoring those who died while serving our country.
"We just went to get coffee and hang out by the river and we're just walking and having a good day for Memorial Day," said Mia Pendola, Reno resident.
Mia's father, Matt Pendola, is an army veteran who says it's important that he spends this day with his family as a way of honoring his late grandfather who was a war hero and very family oriented.
"He got the purple heart saving others and I think to myself everything he did was really in service to his country but his family too, and so for me personally I think to honor that is about spending time with your family," says Matt.
Jordan Swartzlander, a Reno resident, said she's honoring her late father who served our country for over 42 years. She says she's spending the day with her son and teaching him how to embrace the holiday and pay respect to everybody that gave their lives for us.
"They're out there working their butts off or protecting our country so that we can enjoy things like this, so that we can all come down, celebrate, people having picnics, playing in the water. It's nice to just see everybody, the community coming together and just enjoy the holiday," said Swartzlander.
These families want to remind everyone that today is not just an extra day off but an opportunity to spend time with family and honor those who have served our country.
