On Monday, the Nevada Cares Campus opened its new Welcome Center.
The center will be the first thing clients will walk into when entering the campus.
The new building provides a place for staff on sire to work, as well as extending more services.
When speaking with some of the homeless near the campus, most had positive things to say about it.
For those who haven't had the chance to check it out yet say they plan on it.
"It's a great thing," said Mel Hatley who's experiencing homelessness. "You can't beat this. Just the fact that a world-renowned company built it and did a good job."
"Not yet," said Paul Dauksavage who's experiencing homelessness. "I just got back. I was out of town for a day, and I came back last night, and I wasn't here yesterday for the opening, but I'll check it out."
Dauksavage has only been in Reno for a few months, but he says the campus has put him in a much better situation than where he was before.
"They're helping me get a job," he said. "I'm currently going to get my ID back and get a job. You can't do much around here without an ID."Â
There is one group of people who were once homeless like these gentlemen who want to do their part to make a difference.
They're known as the Lived Experience Advisory Board.
"I was homeless for 10 years on and off," said Lawrence Dodson, Lived Experience Advisory Board Member. "So, we provide a perspective that we see things from the ground up."
Right now, there are four members on the board, and they are looking for more people to join.
They provide outreach and conduct surveys on where people are at and what they need.
The group looks into existing policies set by Washoe County and will give their input on it.
"They look at our recommendations, and they take them very seriously," Dodson said.
Dodson says he thinks the Welcome Center will be a great addition to the campus.
"It helps out tremendously because now you're not on the street looking around, there's an obvious place, it's huge," he said. "You can go and get resources you need, you can get your phones, you can get your case worker. That's the main thing, get a case worker and get somebody working on your case where you can have housing."
