An inmate walkaway from Nevada has been convicted of first-degree murder in Sacramento.

Jonathan Autry was convicted by a jury of the first-degree murder of Rocky Pastorino.

On March 23, 2021, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office received multiple requests to perform a welfare check on the victim.

When deputies entered the victim’s apartment, the bedroom door was closed and locked.  Deputies believed the victim was inside the bedroom and instructed him to open the door.  They heard a person inside the room reply, “no” in a low voice.

The victim’s daughter was in the apartment with deputies and stated that was not her father’s voice.

As deputies prepared to kick the door open, they heard a window open and blinds moving from inside the bedroom.  Deputies ran outside and saw Jonathan Autry running away from the apartment.  Deputies contacted Autry and took him into custody.

The victim was later found deceased inside the locked bedroom.  The coroner determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

Autry faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for October 27

March 23rd, 2021 Update:

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office says an inmate walkaway out of Nevada was taken into custody on Tuesday for homicide charges.

Officials say around 12:38 p.m. deputies received a call from a citizen asking for a welfare check of a resident in the 7700 block of Watt Avenue. They said deputies arrived to the apartment and were initially unable to get an answer at the door. Persistent checking revealed a man was inside, who was unknown to the family of the resident.

When deputies tried to detain the subject, who was identified as 34-year-old Jonathan Autry, he allegedly became physically resistive and combative. Once he was detained, deputies entered the home and found the homeowner deceased.

The manner of death is unclear at this time. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office is investigating.

He was booked into the Sacramento County Jail for the homicide charges.

There are no outstanding suspects.

The identity of the victim is not being released right now.
