Elko Police officers responded shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to a report of an overdose at a home on South Fifth Street.
A 31-year-old woman had been helping a friend clean a vacant home. Investigators said the friend left to run errands and returned to find the woman unconscious.
Officers administered Narcan and performed CPR. Despite those efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Elko Police detectives later assisted with the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Detectives are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the source of the suspected fentanyl.
The Elko Police Department and the Elko County District Attorney's Office are working together to identify narcotics dealers and traffickers connected to the case and pursue prosecution where possible.
Police encourage anyone at risk of overdose, or who may assist someone experiencing an overdose, to obtain Narcan.
